Chamber optimistic kites will fly

It’s eyes to the skies this weekend for the Color the Wind Festival.  But until then, all eyes are on the ice.

Monday, officials at the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce reported its safety team measured an average of 13 to 17-inches of ice downtown.  However, with temperatures pushing 40 this week and rain showers, ice cover could deteriorate.

“Our safety crew is checking regularly and we think that barring any super crazy weather event, we’ll be fine,” said Chamber CEO Stacy Doughan.

Recommended guidelines for ice safety state six-inches of ice is all that is needed for human foot traffic and 12-inches for small vehicles.

The Chamber of Commerce will only allow spectators to access the lake on foot for the kite event.  Of course, there are plenty of viewing opportunities from the shore.

Kites will be flying Saturday, Feb. 18, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in front of the Sea Wall in downtown Clear Lake.  Shuttles are available.  See this week’s Calendar listing for details.
