The Clear Lake Lions baseball team (13-12) had four games last week, the first two games were against Webster City and Hampton-Dumont-CAL. The Lions split the games going 1-1.
Webster City 4, CL 3
The Clear Lake Lions (12-10) took on the Webster City Lynx on Monday, June 26, losing the game, 4-3. The loss moved Clear Lake to third in the conference behind the Lynx.
The Lions built a 3-0 lead that held on into the bottom of the sixth when Webster City got on the board with a run. With the score at 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Lions were in a strong position, but gave up three runs to surrender the lead and the win.
The Lions had four hits for three singles and a triple, along with two RBIs, two walks, and three batters hit by pitches. The Lions had two errors, while the Lynx had none.
Luke Fuhrman went one-for-three with a base hit for a run. Ezekiel Nelson had a run on one walk, was hit by a pitch, and had a stolen base. Trevor Theobald scored as a base runner. Titan Schmitt went one-for-three with a triple and an RBI.
Andrew Theiss threw 89 times against 24 batters for three hits, a run, two walks, two hit batters, and eight strikeouts. Fuhrman threw 35 times against nine batters for three hits, three runs, two hit batters, and one strikeout.
CL 12, H-D-CAL 3
The Lions (13-10) took on Hampton-Dumont-CAL (14-13) on Wednesday, June 28, winning the game by a score of 12-3.
The game started quietly at home plate, with no team scoring until the fourth inning when the Lions brought two in. At the top of the eighth, the Lions came alive and scored eight runs to seal the game.
The Lions had nine hits, all for singles. They also had nine RBIs, 12 walks, and one batter hit by a pitch. The Lions led in the error department with none to the Bulldogs’ three.
Titan Schmitt paced the Lions, batting two-for-three with two singles, two runs, and two RBIs while also being walked twice. Ezekiel Nelson batted one-for-two with a single, two runs, an RBI, and was walked twice with one beamed pitch. Luke Fuhrman went one-for-four at the plate with a single, two runs, an RBI, and was walked once.
Also scoring for the Lions was Andrew Theiss, Ben Loge, Dylan Bieber, Tate Garman, Wesley Wharton, and Alex Kerr. Garman also hit two RBIs.
Hudson Carney got the win for the Lions, pitching 83 times against 23 batters for five hits, one run, one walk, and seven strikeouts. Fuhrman threw 13 times against five batters for two hits and two runs.
Lions end week by dropping two
The Clear Lake Lions baseball team (13-12) finished the week with two games, one against Mediapolis and another against Algona. The Lions dropped both.
Mediapolis 6, CL 2
The Lions (13-11) went eastbound and down on Thursday, June 29 to take on the Mediapolis Bulldogs (16-8), losing the game by a close score, 6-2.
The Bulldogs were steady in their scoring, putting two on the board in the second inning, one in the third, and three more in the fourth. Down six, the Lions rallied to score two runs in the fifth inning, but couldn’t complete the comeback.
Both teams struggled to get hits, with the Lions taking two for singles. The Bulldogs had six hits, all for singles. It was a game that was also low in errors, with the Lions committing one, while the Bulldogs had two. A big difference maker in the game was walks. The Lions walked 11 batters while the Bulldogs only walked two.
Ben Loge went one-for-two with a hit for a single, was walked once, and scored a run. Luke Fuhrman went one-for-three with a base hit and a run.
Tate Garman gets the loss at the mound, pitching 85 times against 18 batters for two hits, three runs, six walks, and eight strikeouts. Joshua Monson threw 75 times against 18 batters for four hits, three runs, five walks, and five strikeouts.
Algona 9, CL 2
The Lions (13-12) hosted the Algona Bulldogs (15-14) on Friday, June 30, losing the game by a score of 9-2.
Algona got off to a hot start and never looked back. The Bulldogs scored four unanswered runs in the first inning. Both teams scored one run in the third. Clear Lake scored again in the seventh. Four Algona runs in the sixth inning put the game out of reach for the Lions.
Clear Lake had four hits in the game, all for singles. They were walked four times and hit by two pitches. The Lions had two errors in the game.
Taylor Plagge had both of the Lions’ runs, scoring them on a walk and a beamed pitch. Dylan Bieber went two-for-four at the plate, both for singles. Ezekiel Nelson went one-for-two with a base hit and was walked twice. Tate Garman went one-for-two with a base hit.
CJ Lester threw 85 pitches against 24 batters for one run, five hits, five walks, two hit batters, and three strikeouts. Wesley Wharton threw 29 times against eight batters for three hits, four runs, one walk, and one hit batter. Andrew Theiss had a pitch count of 14, throwing against three batters for one strikeout.
Clear Lake will host Algona on Friday, July 9 for 3A District action. Game time is 7 p.m.
