Briauna Mingus, the daughter of Brian Mingus and Christie Jensen, has earned the title of this years Salutatorian of Eagle Grove High School.
“It means a lot to me because I’ve always prioritized academics and being involved. To see that my hard work has paid off is really special,” said Mingus of the honor.
She said it was during her late middle school years that she decided to reach for this goal. As she proceeded through her school years, she made sure to do her work early rather than leaving it all until the last minute – that included breaking bigger projects into a little bit each day. The system obviously worked for her as she achieved the goal she set so many years ago for herself.
However, Mingus didn’t spend all her time studying. She also found time for things she enjoyed, participating in band, band council, choir, NHS, TAG, student council as vice president, LEOs club, and golf. She also spent some time working at Eagle Grove Greenhouses during the planting season.
“I believe being involved in these activities helped me be a better student because I learned how to work with people as well as how to manage my time,” said Mingus.
As for underclassmen, she leaves behind these tips:
Academics – She suggests organizing and planning out when you’re going to work on things. Try your best to get things done in advance to alleviate stress. And try to get involved in activities or clubs.
“I had my best times in band and choir when I was with my ‘band nerds’ and small groups,” she said jovially.
Mingus said that her favorite part of going to high school in Eagle Grove was the small town support she got.
“Everyone in the community is willing to help you – adults, students, teachers, church…there’s just always someone there,” she said appreciatively.
Although Mingus didn’t get to deliver her Salutatorian speech to her classmates on their originally scheduled graduation day, May 17, she did say the parade was a fun alternative.
“I thought it was very sweet that we were able to do something even though we didn’t have the traditional Commencement. It was nice to see the community come together to support us and have parents step in and plan something before the official ceremony (planned for later in June),” she said.
Mingus’ future plans are to attend Grand View University, a private liberal arts university in Des Moines, to study studio arts.
