Diane Amonson didn’t go to college to become a teacher right after high school. She attended cosmetology school and worked as a cosmetologist for six years. After having her third child she decided to stay home with her kids and provide day care for other kids. She did this for about four years. Diane then decided to go back to school to obtain a teaching degree. She attended ICCC with most of the classes being held at the Eagle Grove campus at the time. After obtaining her AA degree she attended Buena Vista University at the Fort Dodge campus. Classes were held on Monday and Thursday nights from 5 – 11 p.m.
After student teaching at Clarion and Eagle Grove, she was employed by the Eagle Grove school district as a Business Education Teacher. She taught keyboarding at the middle school and business classes at the high school. Later on she obtained her Math Endorsement and taught math classes: Algebra A, Algebra B and Geometry. She has also been the yearbook sponsor for the last ten years. The most rewarding part of teaching is when students understand a difficult concept and have that “light bulb” moment! Another rewarding part of teaching is the personal relationships that were established with the students throughout their school years. The most significant change has been the use of technology.
Diane had heard other teachers say that they just knew when it was time to retire, and after a rough two years with family issues, Diane felt like this is the time to retire! Her retirement plans are to spend more time with her four grandkids, take care of parents, and keep busy with hobbies.
