Thursday, July 9 was a very big day for a special lady in Eagle Grove. Margaret Madson celebrated her 101st birthday, and she did it in style despite COVID.
You could tell she was all smiles despite the fact that she had on a face mask as she sat outside Rotary Senior Living and watched the Eagle Grove Fire and Ambulance Departments come rolling up with lights and sirens going. Family and friends, including her great granddaughter and husband, Lexi and Ethan Rutter, came to share in the celebration – COVID-19 style to help her make her feel extra special.
Madson moved to Eagle Grove for the first time in 1935, and the second time in 1945.
Madson shared that one of her most memorable times was when she was in elementary school.
“I got a nose bleed and got blood all over my dress, so I walked home, changed, then went back to school,” she said.
It goes to show that it really is the little things we remember most.
Throughout her years, Madson has worked as a housekeeper, a waitress, but her best titles have been wife and mother.
In 101 years, Madson has seen many great and sometimes even unbelievable inventions, but the one she thinks is the best of all-time is the microwave.
“It’s so convenient,” she said.
The washer and dryer came in a very close second because of their convenience as well.
Madson said she really doesn’t have a key to living for more than 100 years.
“I just went along and always kept busy,” she said.
She is happy to have received many cards and phone calls to mark the occasion. If you would like to send her well wishes in the mail, you can do so in care of Rotary Senior Living South in Eagle Grove
