Just as graduation was on the minds of the Class of 2019, the Eagle Grove High School Class of 2020, have COVID concerns of their own as they start the new 2020/2021 school year. They, along with their underclassmen peers, have been wondering if the long time tradition of Homecoming will continue. Will they get to have the excitement of Dress Up Days? Will there still be Powerderpuff and Powderbuff games? Will there still be high school Olympics…a parade…Coronation? The answer is YES, they will, but it will be done in accordance to social distancing guidelines.
Lindsay Haugland, along with the other Homecoming committee members and staff members, have been working very hard to put a plan in place that will still allow the kids to show their school spirit, but also keep them safe. Please take note that while many things will remain the same – like Dress Up Days, and the much anticipated girls playing football and guys playing volleyball…there will also be changes as to where and how some of the events will be held. For starters, both the Powderpuff football AND Powderbuff volleyball games will take place OUTSIDE on the football field this year. The girls will begin playing at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16. Outdoor nets will be set up for the guys to play Powderbuff on the field after the girls are finished with football. One thing that hasn’t changed – you’ll want to be sure and come early so you can first enjoy the Sports Boosters’ free-will donation meal before the competitions begin.
The events on Friday, Sept. 18 will also look very different. It has become a great school tradition to hold a school-wide and community Pep Rally on the Friday morning of Homecoming Week to pump up excitement and get everyone ready for Coronation and the big home football game. Unfortunately, COVID has changed how things will happen this year. Activities will only take place for the high school students this year. According to Haugland, the current plan is to be outside and break the students up into smaller groups to enjoy a variety of morning activities. At 2 p.m. students will be dismissed in order to make their way to either ride on floats or watch the parade, which will start at 2:30 PM. PLEASE NOTE – there will be no afternoon Coronation Ceremony this year in the RBMS auditorium.
The big football game starts at 7 p.m. as the Eagles take on Southeast Valley. At halftime of this game is when Coronation and the crowning of our Homecoming royalty will take place. The dance, too, will take place Friday evening – outside on the football field. It will begin one-half hour after the game is finished. It will be free to attend. The dance will be held for one hour.
“We have worked hard to come up with activities that are sure to make Homecoming 2020 one of the best,” reassured Haugland.
This year’s Homecoming theme is “Within Our Walls – 100 years of EG pride,” celebrating 100 years since the current Eagle Grove High School was constructed.
All outdoor activities that are subject to weather may be cancelled and will not be rescheduled.
