The Veterans Memorial Tower in Eagle Grove has been a work in progress since 2011, and the committee is excited to say that another portion of the project was completed last week, thanks in part to a generous contribution from the James R. Johnson Trust Fund and the many generous contributions of people near and far.
Many wondered if the planned addition of the Twin Towers and Pearl Harbor ship on the east side of the old grain elevator across from Fareway would actually happen yet this year because of the Coronavirus. It was originally scheduled to happen earlier this summer. Although it took a little longer to happen then they had planned, it did finally get done the later part of last week. The committee is grateful to have this new important piece, painted by Apex Painting out of Owatonna, Mn, as part of the display to remind us that “lest we forget.” This high rise painting job was only made possible by the use of a lift lined up by K&K Construction.
Don Deuel, Veterans Memorial Tower committee member said that the ship silhouette represents Pearl Harbor. This, along with the Twin Towers, symbolizes the only two foreign attacks on American Social. Daryl Watts, Chairman of the committee, added that while the ship was originally planned to go under the Twin Towers, they have decided to move it to the top so it would be more visible.
Watts and the entire committee are grateful for the community’s patience and support as the project continues to move towards completion one phase at a time. The Veterans Memorial Tower began as a way to turn a deteriorating elevator into a local masterpiece that recognizes local Veterans, former Governor Robert Blue, and give tribute to all those who lost their lives in Pearl Harbor and in the Twin Towers. With each step of progress, it continues to grow as a symbol of not only our country pride, but an appreciation for all those who made sacrifices to defend our nation.
Watts said if funding continues, the committee has many ideas for improving this roughly 80-foot tower that could turn into a destination location for people to see.
The Veterans Memorial Tower has a 501(C)(3) status, which allows all contributions to be tax deductible. If you would like to help this dream continue or have questions about the project, please contact any of the committee members:
