Earlier this month, the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Sonny Perdue, announced that the USDA decided to extend funding for free school breakfasts and lunches for all school age children throughout the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year. Although free meals have been available for all children ages 0 – 18 regardless of income throughout the summer months, it has never been available to all students during the school year. The decision was made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the USDA’s commitment to ensuring all children in the United States have access to regular meals with healthy food.
Eagle Grove Area School Superintendent Jess Toliver is happy to announce that they will be participating in this Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability.
“I figure that these free meals will save each household paying full price for meals around $450 per kid,” said Toliver.
All Eagle Grove Elementary children were already receiving free lunches through a different program this year, but this will still add up to big savings for district families who were paying full price for their students’ meals.
However, if you compare the numbers to last year when all elementary students were not receiving free lunches, Toliver said about $150,000 would be saved by parents in the district that would have been paying for the school lunch program.
Meals will be provided on a first come, first serve basis, at the following sites and times:
