All Eagle Grove girls basketball fans knew that this team was fully capable of this, and that it was just a matter of time until they put it all together on the same night and against the right opponent for them to do it. Luckily, it also came in front of the home fans! The ladies now no longer have that goose egg on their record, as they easily defeated Belmond-Klemme last Tuesday by a 62-37 score.
The home team came right out of the gate on fire, with Lea Friedl making a steal and driving to the hoop for the basket and foul. She put that in for an immediate 3-0 lead. She didn’t stop there, taking a rebound off a missed shot and putting it up for the basket and guess what? Another trip to the line. She hit the free toss for a 6-3 score. It was then Ariane Lyman’s turn to shine, as she drove into the lane but missed the shot. She was fouled and sunk both ends of the one and one for an 8-3 score. Hannah Sampson wanted into the act, and knocked down a pretty three-pointer to make it 11-3. The Bronco coach had seen enough, and called a timeout to try to stop the momentum.
It didn’t work, as Hannah promptly did it again from long range for 14-3 followed by sister Megan being fouled. She couldn’t hit her free tosses, with the Broncos then picking up their seventh point to cut it to seven. Unfazed, Friedl buried a three from the left side for a 17-8 score. Megan then knocked one down from almost the same spot for a 20-8 score, with Hannah then draining one the next time down for a 23-8 margin. Hannah missed a shot, but was fouled. She hit both ends of her free throws for a 25-8 score followed by Friedl going to the line and hitting one toss for a 26-8 lead as the period ended.
The second quarter opened with Lyman breaking through to drive the lane for a basket. She would miss the next time down, with Kaitlin Sampson there to grab the ball and put it in for a 30-11 lead. Lyman then drove inside again for a bucket, followed by Friedl being fouled and hitting both freebies for a 34-13 advantage. Braxton Steil would hit a free throw, followed by Megan getting a garbage basket on a Nadia Kaiser missed shot for a 37-16 halftime score. Truly the best half of basketball the ladies have played in awhile!
However, they were far from done as Friedl grabbed a rebound on a missed shot by Kaitlin and drove to the hoop for a 39-20 score as the third period unfolded. However, things started to unravel a bit as the team got good looks at the basket but the shots just wouldn’t fall in. Hannah finally broke the brief cold spell with yet another trey for a 42-24 lead, followed by Friedl scoring and hitting a free toss as the scoreboard showed a 45-24 score to start the fourth.
Friedl would take a defensive rebound and drive all the way down to score two more. Hannah then drove the lane for a 49-26 score, Friedl would make it 51-31, followed by a steal by Hannah and a pass to a driving Friedl. She would draw a foul and hit the free toss for 54-31. A Friedl jumper made it 56-31, followed later by Brooklyn Osborne passing to Friedl waiting underneath the basket to make it 60-37. Another basket late was followed by the celebration eruption.
The team shot 38.9 percent from the field, 60.9 percent from the line and 46.2 percent from three-point land. They made 31 total rebounds, six total assists and nine total steals.
