A Christmas wish come true

Almost every kid at some point in time wishes to find a bike under their Christmas tree. Granting that wish is harder for some than others. This year, however,in the Kallie and Caleb Nelson home, there are going to be three very happy kids whose wish will come true thanks to the Bikes for Tykes program.

"Our kids are 12, 10, and 7 and they had bikes on their Christmas list last year, but I wasn't able to get them, " explained their mom.

But thanks to the many generous businesses, groups, and individuals who donate to the Bikes for Tykes program, they will be able to make that wish come true this Christmas.

This fall, Kallie called Upper Des Moines Opportunity in Eagle Grove, who distributes the bikes for Wright County, and asked if they could be put on the list to get one for their kids.

"I figured I would surprise them this year since I couldn't get them last year," she said.

This past summer, when lots of people were riding bikes because it was a socially distanced activity that could be enjoyed, the Nelson family had to take turns and share only one bike. Thanks to Bikes for Tykes, that will be a different story come Dec. 25…and if the weather holds out, you're likely to see them all out giving their new set of wheels a test spin in the middle of what is supposed to be winter. But if there is snow on the ground, Kallie said she's willing to break the rules just this once and will probably let them ride them in the house. What a fun Christmas memory that would be, right?!

"It really makes me feel good that I'm actually able to do this (for my kids) through Bikes for Tykes," said Kallie gratefully.

Christmas really is a magical time of year where wishes do come true.
