EGHS students compete at State speech

Several Eagle Grove High School speech teams competed in State speech competition on Saturday, Feb. 6.  The Reader’s Theatre group presented a hybrid performance at the event held in Hampton-Dumont due to a conflict with some of the students being gone to participate in wrestling sectionals.

“This is one of the nice side effects of Covid. Pre-recorded videos have never been allowed, and in the past we would have not been able to have wrestlers compete with us because the conflict happens every year,” stated their coach, Lori Olmstead.

The group recorded their performance the day before the competition (Friday).  Then those students who had no conflicts went to Hampton-Dumont on Saturday did a live introduction and ran the AV equipment.

The judges were impressed with what they saw and gave the Reader’s Theatre group a Division I Rating.  Team members included:  Cael Schaffer, Cadence Stephens, Dustin Dawson, Angela Binkerd, Cael Wesselink, Gabe Binkerd, Alex Frakes, and Imani Shufford.

EGHS also took two group improvs to Hampton-Dumont for the State event.  Both teams competed live and both received a Division 2 Rating.  Team 1 consisted of Alex Frakes and Cael Wesselink.  Team 2 was Cadence Stephens and Angeles Peters.

“I am really proud of the hard work they have put into the season,” said Coach Olmstead.

The EGHS speech students are signing up for the individual speech season this week, and the district competition is scheduled for Feb. 27.

“I am hoping to attend the live competition in Hampton-Dumont again because we have some people competing in categories that I don't have the equipment for,” noted Olmstead.
