The Eagles didn’t make much contact with the ball in their 5-4 win at Bishop Garrigan last Tuesday, but it was just enough to score their first win of the year. In the end, they managed only two total hits and two RBI while taking advantage of three walks. They had seven steals on seven attempts, and fielded for a .914 efficiency percentage. They were up 3-1 after four innings, and 5-3 after five were in the books.

“Cayden gave us a good outing,” stated head coach Jordan Miller. “He had the command and calm on the mound that our team needed. Blake came in and gave us the save. When you have a pitcher compete like that, you’re always in the game.”
“It was definitely a fun game and I hope to have more like it,” said Schultz. “I knew the rest of the team wanted to win that game and would lay it on the line, so my job was to throw strikes and trust my defense behind me.”
The team was shutout at home 14-0 by Lake Mills on Wednesday. Beck, Jeske, J. Warren, B. Morgan, B. Warren and Nolan Krauss all pounded out a base hit each, but the guys just couldn’t take advantage of it to bring runs across. B. Morgan and Morris drew a walk each, while M. Morgan was hit by pitch, to also reach first. They had a .950 team fielding percentage, with B. Morgan fanning seven batters in mound duty. Talon Carpenter came in and got two K’s.
“We kind of ran into a buzz saw in this one,” said Miller. “The Bulldogs have a solid squad, and we weren’t as sharp as we would like to be. There will be days like this where we don’t have our best stuff, but we have to figure out how to limit the big inning when things aren’t going our way.”
They scored, but not near enough, in a 13-4 home loss to Algona on Thursday. Jeske crossed the plate twice, with Morgan and Schultz scoring a run each. Schultz had three hits, two of them doubles, and Chris Williams two. Jeske, Schultz and Williams had an RBI each. Jeske stole two bags, with Schultz and Andrew Dencklau picking off one apiece. Jeske took the loss on the hill, going four innings with five earned on 10 hits. He walked two and fanned three. J. Warren went two innings and allowed four earned on two hits, while Morris threw an inning and gave up one earned on one hit.
“We played a lot better,” said Miller. “Algona has a good squad. They hit the ball one through nine. Our bats started to turn the corner. Every year, pitchers will be ahead of hitters early on. The big thing is we are behind nore than usual with the year off, but the guys are working hard and showing improvements everyday. We may not have won the game, but we saw steps in the right direction. This week will test us with six total games. We call this hell week. I think it is a great way to gauge where we are. This will show us a little more about ourselves as a squad and hopefully solidify our lineup a little bit. Jake is leading us offensively, while Cayden has been our rock on the mound. Brady and Mack have been a nice surprise defensively, and Jordan is playing a solid second base as well as showing some promise on the mound.”
