Marla Hill retires from EG School District after 42 years

After 43 years of teaching Special Education in the Eagle Grove Area Community School District, Marla Hill said the hardest part about being a teacher is leaving all that behind in retirement.

Hill earned her AA degree from Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Fall and did a practicum at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton.

“That inspired me to major in Special Education at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI),” said Hill.

Hill got her first teaching job in Sioux City in 1978, before moving to Eagle Grove’s Lincoln Elementary  in 1979 to work as a Special Education teacher.

“Teaching is a great profession,” she said.  “Every day with kids is fun, exciting, and definitely never boring.

Hill always tried to find new ways to be creative with her students and was always learning better ways to teach from them.

Hill hopes to spend some time traveling and learning new hobbies during retirement, but she also plans to still spend a little time back in school with her students, eventually doing some substitute teaching.

“I would like to thank all my students, para-educators, and colleagues for 43 awesome years.  I wish everyone the best for the future,” Hill concluded.
