The ladies were mired in a slump until last Monday at Garner, when they rose up to capture an 8-3 victory over the home Cardinals. It was 4-0 Eagles after four innings were in the book, with G-H/V plating two scores to cut the lead in half. The Eagles added one in the fifth, then three in the sixth, for good measure and held on from there.

“ It was a great win for our team,” said Addy Jeske. “We are getting better all the time. Brooklyn pitched a great game, and everyone helped make the plays we needed to back her up and get the win. I was glad we got the victory, because it showed how good we work together if we put our minds to something.”
“This was our best played game of the season,” stated head coach Jim McLaughlin. “Brooklyn did a fine job in the circle, and Addy had a great night at the plate and added three steals. Big shout-out to our pinch runners, Olivia (Conaway), Olivia (Anderson) and Calli. They put a lot of pressure on the Cardinal defense on the bases. We’ve always been playing catch-up this year, so it was good to get an early lead. We put the ball in play, with good defense, and did what we needed to do. Lea and Addy got on at the top of the order and set the table for the rest. This was a great team effort both offensively and defensively!”
That was a fun road game, but the next night out at home not so much. The North Union Warriors jumped on the Eagles for 12 runs in the first and 11 more in the second to put it away early on Wednesday. Lea Friedl pounded out two singles for the only plate production. She also stole a base. Braxton Steil threw two innings nine earned on 18 hits. Tarissa Middleton also saw action in the circle, getting two K’s.
“I knew it would be a tough night,” said the coach. “They hit it hard and pitched well. We just need to forget about this one and move on.”
They hosted Southeast Valley on Thursday and lost 13-5 to the Jaguars. The visitors were up 4-1 after four frames, with the Eagles scoring once in the second. The Jags plated five more in the fifth, with the Eagles answering with a four-run sixth.

“We weren’t doing too bad until the fifth inning,” said the coach. “We let in slip away, then battled back some. These girls are young and are trying to learn everyday.”
They traveled to Buffalo Center on Friday and dropped a close 5-4 game in eight innings. Another back and forth game saw the Eagles up 1-0 after one, then adding another in the second. The Bison then went up 3-2 after three were complete, with the Eagles answering back for a 4-3 lead after the sixth. North Iowa tied it in the seventh before winning it in the eighth.

“We started with a 2-0 lead, but left a lot of runners on base,” said McLaughlin. “The Bison came back in the seventh, we had an error and they ended up tying it. We had two outs on them in the eighth, then they got the base hit and won.”
A doubleheader at Algona on Saturday closed out the busy week. The Bulldogs took both games 13-3 and 14-1. In the first one, Middleton and B. Steil got the only hits with one each. Those brought in S. Kaiser and Osborne for the scores. B. Steil drew two walks, with Friedl, Osborne and Axtell getting one free pass each. Middleton had two steals, with S. Kaiser and Anderson picking off one bag each. B. Steil took the loss in the circle.
The nightcap saw a Middleton single score Friedl after Lea drew a walk to get on base. Osborne threw two innings with six earned on five hits with a walk. Middleton threw one inning with six earned on six hits with a walk. “Simply put, we just didn’t hit the ball all day,” said the coach.
