EG Veterans Memorial Tower project remains a priority for committee members

The idea of turning an old, dilapidated elevator on the east side of Fareway in Eagle Grove began as a “What-if?” thought by a small group back in 2011.  It soon became a “Why not?” venture, and that’s where the story of the project to honor our area’s brave men and women who have served as part of the armed forces over the years.  The goal was for the Veterans Memorial Tower, as they began referring to it, to also serve as a proud recognition of our heritage and the town being the home of Governor Robert D. Blue.

In September of 2012, the first phase of the project was completed.  This once rundown eyesoar had gotten a much-needed face-lift with a new coat of paint, and most importantly, a purpose.  Over the years, many changes and improvements followed, in phases, all thanks to the dedication of committee members who have endlessly promoted their project to honor those who so richly deserve it.  One of the most eye-catching additions came in September of 2014 when then Eagle Grove High School senior Mike Dicke assembled three military signs and sealed them during shop class.  It really added an impressive flair to the project.  This, and other additions to the Tower, have been made possible not only by the contribution of community members, but businesses as well.  The most recent update on the east side of the tower was added just this spring.  The Twin Towers and Pearl Harbor ship were painted on thanks to a contribution of the James R. Johnson Trust Fund.

The Veterans Memorial Tower is always a work in progress.  New ideas are brought to life in phases as funding is available, as we’ve seen over the course of the last decade.  As a way to keep this project in sight and in mind, at random times and at random places, the committee has designed a Veteran’s Tower T-shirt.  They are hoping people will want to wear them, not as a fundraiser, but instead as a way to bring more interest to the project.  They are hoping people will see the shirts and ask questions about the project, how it is funded, what the future plans are, and how they can get involved. They also believe this is a great way for those who might not be able to give as much as they would like, to still be able to make a difference in the Veteran’s Tower project.

Committee members are grateful for the community’s patience and support as the project continues to move towards completion one phase at a time.  The Veterans Memorial Tower began as a way to turn a deteriorating elevator into a local masterpiece that recognizes local Veterans, former Governor Robert Blue, and gives tribute to all those who lost their lives in Pearl Harbor and in the Twin Towers.  With each step of progress, it continues to grow as a symbol of not only our country pride, but an appreciation for all those who made sacrifices to defend our nation.

Committee member Daryl Watts stated early-on in the project that he and the committee believes the Vertan’s Tower could turn into a destination location for people to see.
