Oftentimes, young children do not know how to properly communicate that they are having trouble seeing. Many times, they may not even realize they aren’t seeing as well as they should have…which is why the group Lions Club International has made it their mission for many years to offer free eye screenings for children between the ages of six months and six years through the Lions KidSight USA program. The Eagle Grove club was proud to provide this service to the young children of our community recently.
Volunteers of the Eagle Grove Lions Club spent a couple days last week and this week at Eagle Grove Elementary and Head Start, testing the eyes of all the preschool, TK, and kindergarten students right on location for all parents who wished to have their child’s eyes screened. They used a special camera that takes pictures of the eyes in two different directions. Those images are then forwarded on to Lions KidSight in Coralville where it is examined for any possible problems with the eyes. Lions KidSight and the local Lions members and the school nurse then follow up on whether or not a child diagnosed with a problem has been seen by an eye doctor.
Children with eye problems in Eagle Grove have been diagnosed, and then treated, in the past through this free Lions Club program. Due to extenuating circumstances, the child was not able to receive the corrective lenses needed. The Eagle Grove Lions Club was proud to step in for even further assistance, actually purchasing the glasses for the child with our local eye care provider.
This is a nonprofit service offered by the Lions Club.
