Sean McMillan, 32, of Fort Dodge, who was convicted of hitting a Wright County Sheriff deputy with his own patrol vehicle — while handcuffed — has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.
According to an Iowa Department of Public Safety statement filed on the day of the incident, McMillan had been pulled over on Hwy 17 in Eagle Grove. He had been handcuffed and placed in the front seat of the deputy’s squad following his arrest, after the deputy determined that McMillan was a suspect in a disturbance involving a gun. The deputy also determined that McMillan, a felon, was illegally in possession of a handgun, and driving while barred.
As the deputy was contending with McMillan’s passenger, McMillan climbed over the console, and drove the squad into the deputy. The deputy fired one shot at McMillan, hitting the windshield of his squad. After which McMillan fled on foot before being captured in the 300 block of S. Caldwell.
In addition to the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, The Eagle Grove Police Department as well as the Iowa State Patrol, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation participated in the investigation. The deputy was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital the same day.
McMillan’s sentencing came on November 12th, following a plea bargain in which McMillan pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of Assault on a Peace Officer, and Second Degree Robbery.
