Five Alarm Fire In Thor Destroys Historic Buildings

Firefighters from Eagle Grove joined firefighters from the neighboring communities of Goldfield, Vincent, Renwick, Humboldt, and Badger to assist the Thor Fire Department fighting a blaze that destroyed two historic buildings that once housed key businesses in the town of Thor.

“Tons of Manpower and tons of fire trucks,” Thor Fire Chief Kevin Olson told the Messenger’s Chad Thomspon, “It was something to see.” Olson, who leads a team of seven volunteer firefighters, remarked “We are a small department. We get wore out pretty quick. The cavalry showed up just in time.”

Many of the firefighters reportedly worked through the night.

The fire, which occurred late Friday night and burned into early Saturday morning, destroyed the old Humboldt Trust and Savings Bank building, and spread to the former Mercantile Goods store building next door. Both of the Ann Street buildings were a total loss.

Although one person is known to periodically have stayed in the former Bank building oh, no one was home and there were no injuries. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
