Humboldt excels over Eagles 61-26

13 might just be the Eagles’ least favorite number when it comes to the Humboldt Wildcats…as Thursday night’s defeat was the 13th consecutive win for the Wildcats over the Eagles in boys basketball.

The 2021/2022 Humboldt Wildcats squad continued, what almost seems like tradition, their unbeaten streak over the Eagles for the past 12 years. December 18, 2009 was the last time the Eagles triumphed over the Wildcats, which was the fourth consecutive win for them since 2007 at the time. One can only imagine the revenge the Eagle boys squad and the Eagle Grove community have as Humboldt remained victorious for wrestling, and girls basketball this winter season.

17 points were scored in the first half for the Wildcats, as they swiftly gained a nine point lead to tip-off the matchup. The first quarter ended 17-8 with the Wildcats in the lead. The second quarter saw an additional 17 points for the Wildcats-with an extra point to seal the second quarter with 35 points. The Eagles, on the other hand, scored half the amount they did in the first, as they ended the first half with 12 points. 35-12 tipped off the third quarter as the Wildcats possessed a 23 point lead.

The Wildcats continued their lead, as it grew unreachable for the Eagles by the end of the third quarter as they were down 50-19. The fourth quarter saw the least amount of points scored by the Wildcats, though still greater than the Eagles as they ended the Eagles with an extra 11 points to secure a 5-0 record of the season. Meanwhile, the Eagles scored another seven points in the fourth quarter, ending their fifth loss of the season 61-26.

Humboldt’s Wildcats saw much more contribution of points scored as 11 of their players delivered during their domination over the Eagles. On the other hand, Eagle Grove’s Eagles only saw three of their players delivering points during the matchup. SO Drake Canavan sank a solid 17 points for the Eagles with four steals and six rebounds. JR Jordan Morris delivered five points for the Eagles, and an assist, while SR Jensen Cooper added four points to the scoreboard and seven rebounds.

Winston Churchill once said, “Success is not final; failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

The Eagle Grove Eagles, with a young team for both the boys and girls team, have won each match with the absorption of experience and learning of the game. The Eagles will be seeking a fifth win over the Wildcats next time around, rather than a 14th loss for their classic matchup history.

The Eagles will continue their learning process as they are set to host Garner-Hayfield-Ventura on Tuesday, December 21, at 7:30 PM.
