Dressed in pink and black in honor of the Coaches v Cancer Night, the Eagle girls hosted the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines on Monday, Jan. 3rd.
Both teams were aggressive to start the game off, as they emerged onto the court with high pressure. With every shot from the Wolverines, the Eagles answered back. Their response? POINTS. With 2:22 left on the clock in the first quarter, three points were added to the scoreboard in one swift shot as the game was tied 7-7. The first quarter closed with a 15-9 lead for the Wolverines, however this must have meant nothing to the Eagles as they continued their drive with the second quarter underway. The Eagles definitely made a statement in the first quarter as the Wolverines entered the second quarter aiming for more points and putting pressure on the Eagles. With pressure from the Wolverines, the Eagles delivered the same pressure back. Though not every shot scored, and not every pass perfected, the Eagle girls never ceased their fight. Even with a progressing lead from the Wolverines, as they were up 22-15 with 2:57 left, the Eagles could not be broken. The Wolverines were up by 12 points when the first half concluded, with the score resting at 31-19, but the Eagle girls kept the same pressure and energy throughout the first half. The Eagles made the Wolverines earn their win. One could only imagine how powerful the pink and black colors were that night, as they honored those battling the most difficult battle against cancer.
The second half saw the Wolverines securing an abundance of baskets over the Eagles, as they managed to score 16 points in the third quarter. The Eagles struggled to finish the third quarter with a game close enough for a comeback, as they scored 10 points. The third quarter resulted in a 50-27 lead for the Wolverines with only one more quarter remaining. It’s safe to say that a comeback for the Eagles was out of the question, as they were trailing 23 points with eight minutes remaining. However, that didn’t mean the Eagles gave up. From 8:00 to 0:00 the Eagles pressured the Wolverines with different plays that helped them score the most points in any of the previous quarters. The Eagles attempted skillful maneuvers around the Wolverines players and executed them successfully. The girls scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, ending the game with 42 points while the Wolverines captured 70.
It was another loss for the Eagle girls, however in their match versus West Bend-Mallard, the girls showed promise and never allowed themselves to be broken down by the offensive pressure and attacking from the Wolverines. Hoping to capture their first win while repeating this game play, the Eagle girls are set to face North Union at North Union HS on Tuesday, Jan. 4, at 5 PM.
