“That’s two!”; Eagle girls results versus St. Edmond, Forest City, Bishop Garrigan

ST. EDMOND
That’s two!

The Eagle Grove girls basketball team claimed another victory this season-their second-when they took on the St. Edmond Gaels. It wasn’t just their second win of the season, it was also a historical win for Eagle Grove. Before Monday night, the Eagles only defeated the Gaels once. Their last victory was on January 13, 2020 where they defeated the Gaels 36-29. Before that game, however, the Eagles saw zero victories over the Gaels, who have been triumphant over the Eagles for over almost 15 years.
The Gaels (0-10) were up for a thrilling matchup with the Eagle girls hungry for a back-to-back win. Hosted by the Gaels, the Eagles claimed their second victory, after a tight race, with a score of 41-37.
The game didn’t quite TAKE OFF, rather gradually commenced as both teams scored two points in the entire first quarter. With the second quarter underway, the spectators saw more action from the Eagles as they downpoured 13 points over the Gaels. Meanwhile, the Gaels only doubled their points scored from the first quarter in the second. With the first half over, the Eagles soared over the Gaels with a score of 15-6.

The game wasn’t over yet, however. After half-time, the Gaels came back, reviving their chance of victory by scoring 17 points. Though only scoring nine points, the Eagles maintained their lead by one basket. With the concluding score of 24-23 in the third quarter, the Eagles displayed similar aggression by scoring 17 points. The Eagles ran away with the lead throughout the fourth quarter, while conceding 14 points.

FOREST CITY
The Eagle girls went from back-to-back wins to a crushing defeat from Forest City. Scoring only one point in the first quarter, the Eagles conceded 19 points. Despite the 18 point difference, the Eagles put forward aggression and urgency for both offense and defense. To be fair, the Forest City Indians had a 10-2 record, so taking on the Indians would not be easy. With the second quarter underway, the Eagles delivered the same urgency and aggressiveness against the Indians. Though the first half ended 30-5, the Eagles scored an extra three points compared to the first, and conceded eight points less. Before the half was over, the spectators applauded the Forest City player who scored her 1000th point…and it just so happened to be against the Eagles.

Before the third quarter began, fans were welcomed onto the court for a dollar half-court shot. The fans cheered as some of Eagle Grove’s spectators landed the half-court shot successfully.

The third quarter saw the Eagles continuing to struggle as the Indians’ heavy pressure remained. No matter the pressure, the Eagles persisted their efforts, making it successfully down court. It was simply a matter of missing three pointers, incomplete passes, and fierce defense from the visiting team. The third quarter ended 45-7 with the Indians in the lead. The pressure from both teams transferred on to the fourth quarter with the most points scored by the Eagles. The game ended 56-13 with the Indians snatching another victory from the Eagles.

The Eagles were set to face another Top of Iowa Conference competitor, as their next game began at 6:15 PM on Friday, Jan. 14, where they hosted…

BISHOP GARRIGAN
The 10-3 Golden Bears went 11-3 as they crushed the Eagles 60-24.

The first quarter opened with a dominating Golden Bears side pouring 18 points over the Eagles. The Eagles never surrendered to the score, however, as they established pressure against the Golden Bears, despite the score. The first quarter ended 18-7 with Bishop Garrigan in the lead. Mirroring the first quarter, the Eagles scored only eight points while the Golden Bears added 17. At half-time, the score rested at 35-15.

Continuing their pressure and determination regardless of the score, the Eagles continued their efforts to add more points to the scoreboard. The third quarter, however, only saw six points from the Eagles while the Golden Bears added another 18 to increase their lead to 53-21. With the final quarter underway, it was fairly evident the Golden Bears would be heading home with their 11th win. And that’s what they did, as the Eagles scored three while Bishop Garrigan finished them off scoring seven. The game ended 60-24, though the Eagles can still be extremely proud as they secured two consecutive wins with more to come!
Facing the Clarion-Goldfield-Dows on Monday, Jan. 17, at 6:15 PM, at Clarion, the Eagles will be seeking for a third win and revenge as the Cowgirls defeated them the first time around.
