We all play it every day, the game that decides what kind of car we drive, where we live, what we do in our spare time, what we can do for our loved ones, and our community. It’s called the game of life, and as anyone knows, it can be really challenging at times.
Any truly rounded education must include the harsh realities of life. Working for a living. Paying bills. Saving for a rainy day, and not so far off as it seems retirement. At the North Central Career Academy of the Iowa Central Community College in Eagle Grove, juniors and seniors from area high schools (Eagle Grove, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, Fort Dodge, St. Edwards, and Webster City) got a lesson in the financial realities of adult life they’re unlikely to ever forget.
Students at the Iowa Central University Career Academy enroll for a full school year. While attending the Career Academy, they choose from seven career paths: business, computer science, engineering, health sciences, liberal arts, manufacturing, and teaching. When their course of study is complete, students earn up to 21 college credits without paying for tuition, textbooks, materials, or other fees and expenses most college students must absorb.
Located in the former Eagle Grove Armory complex, the Career Academy opened in the fall of 2014, and features classrooms, including video conferencing classrooms, a science lab, a CNA lab, a computer lab, and a manufacturing shop with drill presses, welding booths, lathes, mills, drill presses and other industrial manufacturing tools and equipment. Pretty much everything students need to train for entering the workforce in several different fields.
The Career Academy hosts students from Clarion Goldfield-Dows, Eagle Grove, Fort Dodge, Humboldt, and Wester City Community School Districts, allowing them to pool resources and instructors. Giving students more educational opportunities, and a better chance at a well paying job one day.
