Hometown Cookin’ Favorites: Apple Pie with Crumble Topping

Pie making has always been a challenge for me to make, because of the crust. Growing up, my mom loved making pies. Then when I was out and on my own, I soon learned. I did not have her “apple pie baking” mastered and eventually quit trying.

This recipe, called Apple pie with Crumble Topping, was shared with me from my daughter in law for her apple pie. I am going to try my hand at making this soon. She says the crust is very easy to make. Here is her recipe.

Apple Pie with Crumble Topping Crust:

1 1/2 cup flour
2 tbsp. milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tbsp. sugar

Mix DRY ingredients. Beat milk and oil together and then add to the dry mixture. Press dough into an ungreased pie pan.

Filling:

3/4 c. sugar
¼ tsp. nutmeg
2 tb flour
2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 c brown sugar
A dash of salt

Mix the above ingredients and toss with 5 cups chopped baking apples.

Crumb topping:

1/3 c. melted butter
3/4 c. flour

Mix with a fork until crumbly. (may need to add additional flour)

Bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes BOTTOM RACK. Move to TOP RACK and bake an additional 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Enjoy!

Tip: Wondering what kind of apple to buy for apple pie? Granny Smith is usually the apple for baking or honey crisp is recommended. They will stay firm and not become mushy.
