Rising to the challenge – honoring EMS heroes

Ever since President Gerald Ford proclaimed the first EMS week in 1974, the nation has marked a week of recognition honoring the service and sacrifice of America’s Emergency Medical Services in the 3rd full week of May.

This year, the week is being observed from May 15th, to May 21st, following a proclamation by President Joe Biden. “Every day, emergency medical service (EMS) providers put the needs of their communities above their own as they respond to crises, treat injuries, and save lives,” a White House release read. “Their heroism has been on full display throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, as resilient EMS workers across the country have provided essential care to Americans. This year’s Emergency Medical Services Week theme, ‘Rising to the Challenge,’ pays tribute to the brave frontline professionals who work tirelessly to help their fellow Americans get immediate medical attention in their hours of greatest need.”

The International Association Of Fire Fighters (IAFF) also highlighted the struggles of EMS teams amid the pandemic. “Over the last two years, the COVID-19 pandemic has made it even more challenging for EMS personnel on the frontlines who have continued to provide exceptional patient care,” a release from the IAFF stated.

The President’s declaration also honored those EMS providers “who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty to protect their fellow Americans.” “Our Nation owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to these heroes and their loved ones. May God bless our Nation’s EMS workers and their families.”

The week of honor culminates on Friday, which has been declared EMS Recognition Day, when citizens are encouraged to thank our EMS heroes, and offer them recognition in any way they can.
