The Eagles headed to Grundy Center last Thursday to take part in the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet for District 3. There they competed with the hosting Spartans, as well as Aplington-Parkersburg, Belmond-Klemme, Columbus Catholic, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, Denver, Dike-New Hartford, Jesup, Oelwein, South Hardin and Union, La Porte City.
Freshman Eagle Addy Jeske won the long jump with a new personal record (PR) leap that marked 16' 5", clinching the District Championship and punching her ticket to the State Championships. Eagles who also placed in the field events included Justine Olson and Orlando Melendrez. Olson took 6th in the girls shot put, tossing 34' 3". Melendez snagged 6th in the boys long jump, landing a mark of 18' 11.75".
In individual events, Ayden Feske nabbed the District Championship in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.86, punching her ticket to the State Championships. Blake Morgan took 2nd place in the boys 200 meter dash as well, setting a new PR as well.
In relays, the Eagle Girls team set a new season best by more than a full second, placing 3rd in the 4×100 with a time of 52.1, which will take them to the State Championships. "Congrats Addy, Braxton , Olivia, Ayden Feske, and Fatima," Coach Andy Ettinger said in a Facebook post. "Very proud of you all!!" The Eagle girls also placed 4th in the Sprint Medley and 8th in the 4×200. Meanwhile the Eagle boys took 6th in the 4×400, and 8th in the sprint medley.
"What a night," Coach Ettinger crowed about the girls team's performance. Besides those noted so far, also notching personal bests were Braxton Steil in the 100 meter, Calli Steil in the 800 meter, Maddie Axtell in both the 1500 and 800 meters, and Reese Ettinger in Discus. Additional team bests for the Eagle girls included the Sprint Medley and the 4×200. "All of these girls came to compete and I couldn't be more proud of them," Ettinger remarked.
Final scores for the meet put the Eagle girls in 9th place at 39 points, and the Eagle boys in 11th place at 20 points. The boys meet title went to the hosting Spartans, while Denver took the girls title.
