Lions footlong hot-dog feed a roaring success

How do you make hot dogs good for the eyesight? Make them a foot long, grill them perfectly, and sell them along with a bag of chips and a drink to benefit the work of the Lions Club.

“One of the biggest things that the Lions support is vision,” said Donna Madson of the Eagle Grove Lions Club. “So we check the vision of the preschoolers and kindergarteners. We help buy glasses for children that need them, and other people.”

And it’s not just glasses, Madson said, “we do support other projects in town.”

Those who’ve been helped over the years were among those to show their support. “There was a gentleman that came to the fundraiser and purchased some hot dogs,” Madson related. ” He told us that the Lions helped him in (the) purchase of eyeglasses, and was very grateful for that.”

“It’s going really well,” Madson said just about halfway into their 3 hour fundraiser, “we sold out of footlongs way early.” After selling out of footlong hotdogs, the Lions improvised, switching to regular hotdogs, and just adjusting the price of the meal down from $7, to $5. Which was easy to do, since the fundraiser was being held in the parking lot of Fareway, with the grocer’s permission.

Now, that’s planning! Still, selling out of their full supply almost right away meant that the fundraiser was a big success. And being able to pivot and keep feeding the appetite of the people of Eagle Grove not just for tube shaped meats in a bun, but for helping other people as well meant that the Lions had good reason to roar this time around.
