In a game that saw the Eagles Varsity football team struggle to break the ice, making their first marks on the scoreboard in the second half, the Eagles kept fighting even though luck didn't seem to be on their side.
In the first quarter the Cowboys scored a touchdown and the extra point. The Eagles, however, were narrowly denied the end zone more than once, after a pair of hail mary passes that took their receivers out of bounds.
In a dismal second quarter the Eagles tried over and over to punch through GCD's defensive line, to no avail. With the plays called by head coach Logan Willard keeping the ball close to the ground, and avoiding any breakout runs. But the quarter saw Cowboys reaching the end zone twice, and making the extra point once. Ending the first half at 20 to nothing, Cowboys over Eagles.
The real contest started after the halftime break. The Eagles came out ramped up and ready to keep up the fight. And Coach Willard's plays got gradually more aggressive. Finally, senior Tate Richardson plowed through and made it to the end zone, with junior Drake Canavan hot on his heels, pointing to the heavens.
In the final half of the final quarter of play, the Eagles really turned up the heat. Although they still went for the punch through time after time, they also made some big plays that paid off. The Eagles scored 14 more points, with two touchdowns plus both extra points. Including one by junior Jake Jeske, who was denied the end zone by yards on multiple other occasions. Briefly tying the game up at 20 points, before the Cowboys sailed into the end zone again.
As the tension dialed up going into the bottom half of the final quarter, and just as it seemed the momentum had turned to the Eagles' favor, an interception turned the tide back to GCD's favor.
Unfortunately, a stunning interception turned the momentum back to GCD's favor. Which saw the Cowboy receiver race down three quarters of the field, narrowly avoiding tackles several times, all the way into the end zone. On the sideline, a furious Willard growled in frustration. After yet another score by the Cowboys, GCD ran down the clock, wrapping up a victory with a final score of 48 to 20.
