The 1-2 Eagles football team headed north on Friday to West Central Valley high school to face the 2-1 Wildcats for what ended up being a nail biter.
Both teams hit the ground running, with both teams getting to the end zone. But while the Wildcats made it there twice, and earned an extra point, the Eagles made it there once, and didn’t. Which brought the game to a a score of 13 to 6 at the end of the first inning.
In the second inning, the Eagles were resolved not to let the Wildcats score any more. And they held firm to that resolve. Putting another run into the end zone but again missing the extra point. Bringing the game to a one point margin, 13 to 12, with the Wildcats in the lead at the half.
In the second and third quarters both teams fought it out like wild rams, smashing into each other time after time. Each team determined to keep the other from scoring. And while the Eagles took to the air with four passing attempts, the Wildcats tossed seven times. And while both averaged the same distance in yards per catch, at 15 even, the Wildcats covered 60 yards in the air while the Eagles only covered 15.
What put the Eagles back in the game with such an imbalance in the air was their imbalance on the ground. Rushing for 290 yards to the Wildcats 110. And making 62 rushing attempts compared to 36 from the cats.
Ultimately, however, both teams managed to succeed in keeping the other from scoring in the second half. And that handed the win to the Wildcats, by one point.
Leading Eagles were senior Cayden Schultz, senior Korey Anderson, junior Drake Canavan, and senior Tate Richarson. Schultz led in rushing yards with 108 – a third of the rushing yards the Eagles put on the scorecard. Anderson led in tackles, taking down Wildcats 7.5 times. Canavan led in receptions, with 15 yards in a single reception. And Richardson led in passing yards, at 15 from the same throw.
The Eagles will meet the Woodward-Granger Hawks at Hawk stadium, to the south in Woodward for a homecoming game, this Friday, September 16, at 7:00 PM.
