Santa For Seniors program announced

Upper Des Moines Opportunity (UDMO) has announced a new "Santa for Seniors" program designed to lift the spirits of senior citizens on a fixed income this holiday season. "This is a program a lot like Secret Santa," said Wright County Outreach Specialist Chris Whipple, noting that instead of being in the workplace or at school, it's in the general community for "seniors in need in our community" whose school and work days are behind them.

"We just kinda wanted to lift their spirits too, not just the kids, and give them a big smile," Said Whipple. "That's just kinda what we thought. Seniors need some Santa too!"

Fifteen Wright County seniors in need have been selected at random and contacted by "Santa" to find out what's on their Christmas wish list this year. Those wishing to help can contact UDMO in Eagle Grove at their office at 221 W. Broadway, or call them at (515) 448-3704.

Those deciding to become "Santa's Helpers" will be given the opportunity to anonymously "adopt" a senior for the holidays. They will be informed of the age and gender, but not the name, of a senior in need, and a copy of the senior's holiday wishlist. Once they've purchased the items on their adoptee's wishlist, they can drop them off at the UDMO office to be delivered to the senior by "Santa".

If successful, the program may be expanded in coming years.
