Prairie Potholes dot the spring landscape

Prairie Potholes in Wright County:  Approximately 12,000-15,000 years ago,  a large glacier from the north "smoothed" out the land in Wright County as it progressed very slowly to the ending point around Des Moines.  This glacier left indentations into the land called Prairie Potholes.  These potholes can still be seen when rain or snow collects in them on the frozen landscape.

To be able to farm this land, drainage tile was installed which allowed the land to dry out and be farmed.  The photos taken recently illustrate these Prairie Potholes on the frozen landscape.

These photos were taken from the air, shortly before the inch plus rain we had on 2-27-23. This rain would show even larger potholes filled with water.
