Schild Wins AAU State Championship!

Congratulations to the new reigning 5th & 6th grade boys AAU State Champion in the 215 weight class, Christian Schild! Schild won the championship on Saturday at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Also wrestling in the tournament were Colson Schafer, Jack Schreiber, and Chase Harle, who all placed as well.

 

In his championship round 1, Christian Schild received a bye and didn't have to wrestle a match. Moving on to the quarterfinal, Schild faced off against Mateo Gonzalez from the Alta-Aurelia Warriors. Schild dominated the match, winning by a quick fall at just 36 seconds into the bout.

 

In the semifinals, Schild faced a tougher opponent in Pershavion Holmes from the Wahawk Wrestling Club. However, Schild managed to pull out a close victory with an 8-7 decision, securing his place in the championship match.

 

In the do or die 1st Place Match, Schild faced Vincent Lumetta from the USA Mat Club. Again the wrestlers were evenly matched, but Schild was able to edge out Lumetta with a 2-0 decision, taking home the championship title in the B 5th-6th Grade 215-pound weight class, and 26.0 team points.

 

Wrestling in the 5th-6th Grade boys 114-pound weight class Colson Schafer faced Weiler Johnson from East Buchanan in their championship round, winning easily 7 to 0.

 

Moving on to the second championship round, Schafer faced off against Matthias Thornburg from the Big Game Wrestling Club. Thornburg secured a fall at 1 minute and 31 seconds into the bout, winning the match over Shafer,

 

However, Schafer was able to bounce back in the consolation rounds. In the second round of consolations, he won by a major decision of 13-0 over Ashton Droege from the Keokuk Kids Wrestling Club.

 

In the third round of consolations, Schafer faced Cameron Howard from the Bettendorf Wrestling Club and won by a 5-1 decision. In the fourth round of consolations, Schafer won by fall at 1 minute and 58 seconds into the bout over Keegan Oliver from the Ankeny Wrestling Club.

 

In the fifth round of consolations, Schafer won by another close decision, this time defeating Tate Halverson from the Humboldt Wildcat Wrestling Club with a score of 5-3. In the consolation semifinals, Schafer faced off against Tate Buthe from the Glenwood Wrestling Club. Unfortunately, Schafer lost the match by a fall at 1 minute and 27 seconds into the bout.

 

Finally, in the 5th place match, Schafer faced Henry Kruger from the Starmont Stars. However, Schafer was unable to win the match, as Kruger secured a 6-1 decision victory. Despite this loss, Schafer placed 6th in the B 5th-6th Grade 114-pound weight class and earned 15.0 team points for his team.

 

Schreiber, wrestling in the 5th-6th Grade 83-pound weight class placed 6th in his weight class and scored 19.5 team points for his club.

 

Schreiber started off his tournament run in the championship round 1 against Sullivan Reese, representing the Powerhouse Wrestling Club. Unfortunately, Schreiber lost by fall (1:52) in this match.

 

Down but not out, Schreiber faced Clayton Shultz, representing the West Branch Wrestling Club, in his first consolation round. Schreiber dominated this match and won by technical fall (16-1). Moving on to the consolation round 2, Schreiber faced Brody Hartter from CL-GLR. Schreiber won this match by fall (2:44).

 

In the third  consolation, Schreiber faced Cruz Allen from DC Elite. Schreiber won this match by major decision (13-0). In the consolation round 4, Schreiber faced Cole Dunkel from Dubuque Wrestling Club. Schreiber won by fall (3:27). In the consolation round 5, Schreiber faced Jamison Ruby from Moyer Elite. Schreiber won by fall (1:31).

 

Moving onto the consolation semifinals, Schreiber faced Conner Helgeson from Lake Mills Bulldogs. Unfortunately, Schreiber lost by fall (2:30) in this match.

 

In the 5th place match, Schreiber faced Jace Blum from The Best Wrestler. Unfortunately, Schreiber lost by fall (0:17) in this match, resulting in a 6th place finish for him in the tournament.

 

Eagle Grove finished 33rd out of 418 teams with a score of 82.5, thanks to an excellent all around effort from the 4 players. "These kids dug deep and ended their AAU State Tournament with some nice hardware," Coach Derek Graham wrote on Facebook. "So proud of them and everyone else who competed. Every single kid represented our program well."
