The Eagle Grove Sports Boosters sponsored a fun night of spicy chili and spicier trivia contests at the Rails Depot on Saturday, with proceeds supporting athletics in Eagle Grove. A $10 cover charge at the door included all you could eat chili, and the entry fee for trivia players, who formed into teams of between two and eight players.
In the chili competition, which was judged by the audience in a blind taste test, first place was a tie between event organizer Darren Robinson, and Angie and Mike Anderson. Because of the tie for first place, no second place was awarded. And third place went to Zach Boyer. Nine different chilis in all competed, and all were delicious – even if a few did stretch the definition of "chili". And, of course, for those who had other fare in mind, the full menu of mouth watering meals offered by Rails was available.
After the Cook Off winner was announced, it was on to the Trivia Night challenges. Five rounds were played for the competition. However, since everyone was having such a good time three unofficial rounds were played after the competition, just for fun!
Team "Trivia Newton John" took first place in the trivia contest, with team "The Dozen" (of which there were only five – so named after Barstool Sports trivia game of the same name) took second place. Full disclosure: I was one of the five in "The Dozen".
Although there were cash prizes on offer for the winners in both the chili cook off and the trivia contest, all the winners agreed to donate their winnings back to the Sports Boosters. Which brought the total raised to support local athletics to $870 for the night.
