Divine Appointments, and a Divine Performance

At the 2023 Senior Baccalaureate, the crowd enjoyed a performance by a local Christian Rock quartet, before the speakers took to the stage.

"John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States once said, 'My fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country," said featured speaker Paul Van Gorkom, Executive Director of GoServ Global. "Allow me to paraphrase this to tonight's topic of 'Living a Life of Service and Humility'. Ask not what your parents can do for you – ask what you can do for your parents. Ask not what your friends can do for you — ask what you can do for your friends. Ask not what your neighbor can do for you – ask what you can do for your neighbor."

Van Gorkem pointed out that this concept was at the heart of service, and then listed off a series of local organizations that focus on service. The FFA, Scouts USA, food pantries, Upper Des Moines Opportunity, the Lions Club and Rotary Club. In fact, he noted, Eagle Grove has an exceptional history of service, and many examples of people who have performed good deeds. But one stands, Van Gorkom pointed out, stands out above all the others. "Only three people in the history of Iowa have had a day named after them," Van Gorkom explained, "and Aaron Eilerts from Eagle Grove is one of them."

Quoting the Bible (Mark 10:45) Van Gorkom read, "For the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Jesus, Van Gorkom pointed out, led by serving. He washed feet, fed the hungry, He lived a life of humility. "So," Van Gorkom said, "let's serve like Jesus."

"To be a servant means we genuinely need to care about people," Van Gorkom elaborated. "It's keeping our eyes, hearts, and schedules open for diving appointments."

In closing his speech, Van Gorkom left the audience with a challenge. "Find an opportunity to serve somebody right here in Eagle Grove," he urged. "And starting tomorrow, or even tonight to begin to humbly serve like Jesus did. Then do it every day for the rest of your life."

Following the speeches, the Senior Choir performed.
