8th Place Finish Not Enough For State XC Berth

In a stacked district featuring five ranked teams, the Eagle Grove boys cross country team would have to run blistering PR’s if they hoped to qualify for state. The PR’s were there for several EG runners, but unfortunately, the competition was just that good.

Only three teams and the top fifteen individuals from each district can qualify for state, but the Eagles held their own at Dike’s Fox Ridge Golf Course. Junior Zabdi Castro (29th place) sped through the course with a sub 18 minute 5K, and his teammate Noah Thul (31st) finished his last high school cross country race with a time of 17:54. Underclassmen Felix Reyes (45th) crossed the line a minute later with a time of 18:54, and Cooper Thacker (56th) and Dylan Beck (57th) stayed packed together as the last scoring members of the squad.

Ninth grader Hunter Waldo-Martinez finished 65th and junior Patrick Heaton placed 67th. Each boy had times right below 20 minutes.

There’s a lot to look forward to as Coach Demuth has six of his seven varsity runners returning next year. Congratulations to all the boys and coaches on a competitive year.
