Snow at last!

Following a snowstorm that began on Monday night and dropped ? inches of sticky white fluff on the city overnight, homeowners and road crews were out in force clearing streets, driveways, and sidewalks. The storm was predicted to see snowpack fall from between as little as 2-3 inches, to as much as 8-9 inches across Iowa. Actual snowfall in Eagle Grove was close to the middle of that spectrum, but still plenty to pile up significantly.

Winds were predicted to gust as high as 45 miles per hour (MPH), but according to a post to the Wright County Secondary Roads Facebook page made at 5:19 AM Tuesday, were blowing around 20 MPH, and expected to reach as high as 30 MPH within an hour.

Urging drivers to “please make it a safe day,” the Secondary Roads crew noted that “roads are snow covered and slick. Wind is going to get worse in the next hour and continue to gust in the low to mid 30’s until well after sundown. Snow will taper off this afternoon. Visibility is going to get worse.”

Eagle Grove’s schools announced their closure the night before the storm, and the Wright County courthouse, public health and professional buildings were also closed Tuesday.

The snowfall comes during a period of drought across Iowa that provided almost no prior snowfall until the January 8 storm, which covered green grass that was visible earlier in the day on that first ide of January day.
