High speed chase leaves local man under arrest

What started as an attempted traffic stop in Eagle Grove quickly turned into a high speed chase, and ended in the arrest of one man early Tuesday morning.

An eye witness to the pursuit, Kennon Fischer, said that the chase involved “3 or 4” police vehicles, and reached estimated speeds of “80 or 90 miles an hour” as it passed through the sleepy residential street Cadwell, in the 100 block.

According to Deputy Joshua Smock of the Wright County Sheriff’s Office the pursuit began when he attempted to make a routine traffic stop. After which the suspect, 35 year old Blake Pohlman of Eagle Grove, led officers from the Wright County Sheriff’s Office and the Eagle Grove Police Department on a high speed chase. The chase led out of Eagle Grove, and onto gravel roads, before running back through Eagle Grove.

According to Smock, speeds were greater outside of town than in, and in spots across black ice. “It was slippery,” Smock said, noting that luckily the pursuit happened in the earliest morning hours when roads were largely deserted.

The Chase came to an end in an alleyway near the AGP plant, where the suspect’s blue Chevy Trailblazer could be seen atop a large block of ice.

“This was a case of good communication and teamwork,” Smock said of Pohlman’s capture, in spite of his attempts to escape.

Pohlman was charged with eluding, driving while revoked, and reckless driving and was booked into the Wright County Jail to await his initial court appearance.
