Fry-Day Lenten Fish Fry hooks a huge crowd

Second fish fry scheduled for March

You know you’ve got massive attendance for a community dinner when you go through over ten dozen baked potatoes in the first fifteen to twenty minutes. And that’s what the crowd was like for Friday’s Fry-Day Night Lenten Fish Fry at the Eagle Grove Evangelical Lutheran church. They also went through 120 containers of coleslaw and twelve dozen rolls in the same time. And twelve big pans of desserts were down to three platters worth.

“It went very well,” said Brandi Larsen, one of this year’s organizers. “I think it went over a lot better than we expected,” agreed Felicia Olson, the other organizer.

Collectively the pair call themselves the “Mission Trip Moms” That’s because in addition to reeling in the crowds for fish and fellowship on the second Friday of lent, the fish fry is a fundraiser for the church’s annual mission trip. In the past, the trip has been about community service projects. But this year it will centera around attending the NALC (North American Lutheran Church) Continental Youth Gathering (CYG) in Boerne, Texas, July first through fourth.

There will be a smaller contingent of local students attending this year, four students and two adults (Larsen and Olson). Of the students, four (Skylar Premo, 16, Lily Locke, 15, and Hailey Olson, 14) are mission trip veterans, and one (McKenzie Larsen, 13) is a first timer.

And while the local contingent will be smaller, they will be joining up with over 500 other youth attending the gathering from all over the continent.

“It’s nice to have a break,” said Olson’s daughter Hailey Olson, about the changeup. “We’ll be staying in a hotel instead of working in 115 degree heat, and sleeping in a church,” she noted, “but I will miss helping people.”

The younger Olson said she also looks forward to visiting Six Flags on the trip, and going to the new Buc-ee’s. There is also a lock-in retreat planned for April.

But those hotel rooms and excursions will make this trip more expensive. So there is one more fundraiser planned – a second fish fry on March 22nd.
