On February 10th, five Eagle Grove grapplers stamped their tickets to the state wrestling tournament in Des Moines. The boys competed against seven other schools in the 2A District 10 meet held at Webster City High School.
Freshman Dylan Terwilliger qualified for state after placing 2nd at 106 lbs. He handled James Decker of West Marshall in a 7-0 decision after receiving a quarterfinal bye. Later in the day, Dylan lost by fall to a Nevada wrestler, but he was able to secure silver and a state berth.
Senior Mack Morgan (120) will be making his 3rd consecutive trek to Wells Fargo Arena after his 2nd place finish at districts. Morgan pinned one opponent and defeated another by decision on his way to the title match, where he lost by fall to top ranked Kaden Weber of Nevada.
Connor Christopher had a roller coaster of a day at 144 lbs. His career win total reached triple digits with his victory by fall over Jaysen Vankham of Webster City. The senior celebrated his hundredth win in front of a sizable Eagle Grove cheering section, but his mission wasn’t complete. Connor suffered a loss by fall in the final seconds of his semifinal match before rattling off three straight wins by decision to earn runner-up and his first trip to state.
Hayden Schafer was understandably emotional after qualifying at 150 lbs. The sophomore won by fall over Holden Simms of West Marshall before beating Tristan Mason of Webster City in a narrow 3-2 decision.
Fellow sophomore Jayden Kreitlow was also able to qualify at 175 lbs. after a 2nd place finish in Webster City. Kreitlow was 3-1 on the day with two wins via decision and another via fall.
Cooper Thacker (132), Jesus Baez (285), Reece Demuth (165), Jackson Babcock (126) and Cristofer Duarte (138) also wrestled well for EGHS but did not advance to state.
