Canavan can’t quit

Drake Canavan will be donning a different shade of purple next season. The Cornell College commit is eager to represent the Rams at the next level, but he’ll never forget his formative years spent here in Eagle Grove.

“This community means a lot to me,” Canavan said with a smile.

The senior star has already given so much to the loyal fans who have watched him flourish on the basketball court these past four seasons. He recently added another milestone to his impressive list of athletic accomplishments when he was named All-Conference in the Top of Iowa-West Conference for the third consecutive year.

Drake is understandably proud of the honor, but still remains gracious when asked about his success and de facto role as a hero to younger Eagles.

“When I see signs or kids with t-shirts that have my name or when kids come up to me after the game and ask me to sign it, it’s a very humbling feeling,” he commented. “I hope to someday give back to them in any way that I can whether it be helping in a camp or coaching a team that they might be on.”

In an exhilarating season filled with bruises, blowouts, buzzer beaters, and everything in between, Canavan was a stabilizing force. He averaged a team high 17.5 points per game while shooting 36% from distance, pulled down 6.2 rebounds, and got his teammates involved with 3.4 assists per contest. There are of course some games that Drake feels his team should’ve won, but he says his final season was “a great overall experience” that he would do all over again if given the opportunity.

“I can always say that I gave it my all in my senior year.”
