Protect Our Drinking Water, Reject CO2 Pipelines

As a member of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement and a consumer of Iowa’s drinking water, I am opposed to Summit Carbon Solutions CO2 pipeline water permits.

Summit Carbon Solutions has requested water use permits that would drain an estimated billions of gallons of water per year from our ancient and threatened aquifers. Why use so much of our scarce aquifer’s waters for this pipeline scheme? In order to liquify, to compress CO2 from ethanol plants, the CO2 has to go through a heating and cooling process. Once liquified, the poisonous liquid can be sluiced through unsafe pipelines on its way to be sequestered in North Dakota. Where there is no storage location yet secured (North and South Dakota regulators have denied Summit Carbon Solutions proposed plan).

There are two stakeholders in this proposed CO2 pipeline: Summit Carbon Solutions CEO Bruce Rastetter and lowa’s 3.3 million water consumers. The profiteering Rastetter has made his millions hom pigs and ethanol production. He wants to add to his fortune with this CO2 pipeline scheme to drain our aquifers.

If the state DNR approves this permit request, we strike another nail into our growing coffin of a poisoned water supply. Reject the request and Iowa can stabilize our legacy of safe water

Protect our water, demand no DNR pipeline water permits. Contact Kayta Lyon, Director of Iowa DNR kayla.lyon@dnr.iowa.gov.
