EGHS Seniors Seek Community Service Projects

Members of the Eagle Grove High School class of 2024 are seeking community service projects! So if you've got a great idea for something beneficial that students could do to earn community service hours, now's the time to share your idea.

And, if you're someone who needs help with a project, several members of the Class of 2024 are looking for projects to help with. Projects should be located in Eagle Grove or within two miles of the city, and take a group of three to five students roughly three hours to complete.

Those who have ideas or need help should reach out to Anthony Wubben or Kat Alesch at Eagle Grove High School, at 515-448-5143.

To do my part coming up with ideas, I asked one of the new electronic gurus of the dawning AI (Artificial Intelligence) era, Open AI's Chat GPT, for some ideas with the prompt "please give me some ideas for reasonably quick community service projects that high school seniors could complete in a few hours."

Here's what it came up with:

Park Cleanup: Organize a group of volunteers to pick up litter, prune bushes, and clean benches in a local park.

Senior Citizen Assistance: Visit a local retirement home or community center to spend time with seniors, play games, or help them with tasks like gardening or reading.

Community Garden Maintenance: Offer to weed, water, or plant flowers in a community garden or public space.

Food Bank Assistance: Volunteer at a local food bank to sort and pack food donations.

Beach or River Cleanup: Coordinate a cleanup effort along a local beach, river, or waterway to remove trash and debris.

Homeless Shelter Support: Help serve meals or organize donations at a homeless shelter in your area.

School Beautification: Work with your school administration to clean up school grounds, paint benches, or plant flowers.

Animal Shelter Help: Volunteer at an animal shelter to walk dogs, socialize with animals, or assist with cleaning kennels.

Neighborhood Cleanup: Organize a neighborhood cleanup event where volunteers pick up litter, trim overgrown bushes, and spruce up common areas.

Educational Workshops: Host a workshop at a local library or community center on topics such as resume writing, basic financial literacy, or study skills for younger students.

Clothing Drive: Collect gently used clothing from your community and donate them to a local shelter or organization that supports those in need.

Environmental Awareness Campaign: Create and distribute flyers or posters in your community to raise awareness about environmental issues like recycling, water conservation, or energy efficiency.

Reading to Children: Volunteer to read books to children at a local library, preschool, or community center.

Painting Murals: Work with local artists or art organizations to paint murals in public spaces to beautify the community.

Emergency Preparedness Kits: Assemble emergency preparedness kits for families in need, including items like non-perishable food, water, flashlights, and first aid supplies.

Community Library Cleanup: Offer to organize and clean shelves, dust books, and assist with library maintenance at a local community library.

Art or Craft Workshop for Kids: Host a creative workshop for children at a community center, teaching them how to make simple crafts or art projects.

Trail Maintenance: Partner with a local park or conservation organization to help maintain hiking trails by clearing debris, fixing signs, or improving pathways.

Tutoring Sessions: Offer free tutoring sessions for younger students in subjects where you excel, such as math, science, or language arts.

Community Meal Preparation: Volunteer at a community kitchen to help prepare and serve meals to those in need.

Pet Adoption Event Assistance: Assist at a local animal shelter or rescue organization with pet adoption events by walking dogs, interacting with potential adopters, or helping with setup and cleanup.

Community Safety Awareness: Organize a workshop or presentation on topics like fire safety, internet safety, or personal safety for members of your community.

Letter Writing Campaign: Write letters of appreciation to healthcare workers, first responders, or military personnel to show gratitude for their service.

Community Sports Event Support: Volunteer at a local sports event, such as a youth soccer tournament or charity run, by helping with registration, handing out water, or cheering on participants.

Technology Assistance for Seniors: Offer to help seniors in your community with basic technology skills, such as setting up email accounts, using smartphones, or navigating social media.

Community Storytime: Host a storytime event at a local library or community center, where volunteers read books to children and engage them in related activities.

Community Health Fair: Assist with organizing and running a community health fair, where residents can access free health screenings, information on healthy living, and resources for healthcare services.

Community Beautification Project: Coordinate a project to plant flowers, trees, or shrubs in public spaces to enhance the beauty of your community.

Local Business Support: Volunteer to help small local businesses with tasks such as cleaning, organizing, or promoting their products and services.

Environmental Education Campaign: Create educational materials or presentations to raise awareness about environmental issues like climate change, pollution, or conservation in your community.

You know, I've gotta hand it to those folks at Open AI. That looks like a pretty solid, nicely varied list to me. Each one is something a high school student, or group of students, could do in a few hours time. Each presents an opportunity to make a positive impact in our community, while fulfilling their service requirements. Each would help to foster a sense of civic responsibility in the students, while providing them with the chance to build meaningful connections in the community, and just generally contribute to the greater good.

And, I have to hand it to folks here in town, because several of those projects are things that folks are already doing. The efforts of local church groups to help the food bank come to mind. As does the work of the local scouts to maintain trails, and serve meals at a Fort Dodge homeless shelter. So do the recent health fairs and Slam the Stigma mental healthcare events. As do all the efforts around Aaron Eillerts Day projects. As do the art and craft workshops by Studio Sol. As do the efforts of the folks at Lazy J Rescue Ranch.

Way to go, Eagle Grove. Let's keep it up!
