Last Tuesday, June 25th, the Eagle Grove baseball team donned their all black jerseys on a hot and humid Senior Night in Greenwood Park. The visiting North Union Warriors were seeking revenge after dropping a game to EG earlier in June, but the mighty Eagles came through with three late insurance runs and thwarted any attempt at a comeback.
Down a run in the bottom of the 1st, senior left fielder Mack Morgan walked and promptly stole a base. Jake Jeske, the owner of the highest batting average in the Top of Iowa-West Conference, hit a stand up double that scored Morgan, and fellow senior Nolan Krauss kept the party going with a one-run infield single. A few batters later, Jaxon Morris had an RBI single of his own that made it 3-1.
The Warriors tied the game in the 3rd inning, but Canavan crossed home after a groundout from Morris and gave the purple and gold the lead again. Krauss had a two-run double later in the contest that increased the Eagle advantage to three runs.
Brett Ascherl’s late game RBI single to left scored pinch runner Adrian Whipple, and the Eagles scored two more runs on their way to a 9-5 victory.
Starting pitcher Syrus Willard earned his third win of the season after a four-strikeout, six-walk performance in 4.1 innings on the mound.
