A season ago, Eagle Grove’s Mack Morgan hit .405, but was barely snubbed from the Top of Iowa-West All-Conference First Team. This year, the recent graduate knew before the baseball season started that he didn’t want to be a “Second Teamer” for the third year in a row, and he did everything in his power to ensure a spot on the elusive First Team.
This summer, Morgan earned his way to a First Team selection after leading the Eagles with 30 runs. He also had a perfect fielding percentage with no errors in left field and at second base, and his .375 average was the third best on the squad. Mack also showed his versatility and quickness by stealing 24 bases on 25 attempts.
The sport of baseball runs in Morgan’s family, and he attributes much of his success to individual workouts with his father.
“I’ve played baseball ever since I can remember,” said Morgan. “My dad was an All-State player, so he’s helped me a lot every day. Before games or practices, I’ll swing at home. We have a net and I’ll send him videos so he can critique my swing. That’s helped me come a long way.”
That confidence built at home led to direct results at the plate for Mack, who says that the game is mental more than anything.
“When I get to the batter’s box I have to own the plate,” he stated calmly. “If I show any signs of weakness, the pitcher’s going to take advantage of me or I’ll get in my head. When I get up there it’s my box. I put in the work and I’m going to hit it as hard as I can.”
