On Saturday night, the Eagle Grove girls basketball team played a Class 3A, Region 6 postseason game at Estherville-Lincoln Central.

The Eagles were coming off of a 59-25 Tuesday night home loss to Garner-Hayfield-Ventura, and the sixth-ranked Midgets had won nine of their last ten contests.

Estherville-Lincoln Central jumped out to a 64-12 lead at halftime and would advance to play Humboldt in the next round after blowing out the purple and gold 83-17.

Taytum Edwards had team-highs of 10 points and two steals to lead the Eagles. She finished her freshman campaign averaging 10.4 points per game and 2.6 steals per game.

After the game, Coach Zach Whipple praised Taytum for excelling in the point guard role this season.

“Losing our main ball handler Addy Pamperin early in the season really hurt,” the second-year head coach admitted. “That put a lot of pressure on Taytum to be our primary ball handler and scorer. She did a great job all season while being face guarded in almost every game.”

With nine underclassmen on the varsity team this year, Whipple says he’s eager for what’s in store.

“The girls are bought in and looking forward to next year,” he remarked. “The morning after our season ended at E-LC, the girls asked if we could open the gym so they could start preparing for next season. That’s what we need and what we will continue to have with this program. The future is bright.”

Junior Kendra Schild contributed two points, six boards, and a steal against E-LC. Her 8.1 rebounds per game led the 1-21 Eagles this season.
