The Sloopers of 1825 Are Coming to Lake Mills

By Rodger Tveiten,

Dale Goodman, a presenter for the Vesterheim Museum’s speaker’s bureau, will share The Sloopers of 1825 at the Norwegian heritage banquet in Lake Mills on Monday, May 5, 2025. His great-great-great-great-grandparents were among the 52 passengers on the 54 foot long, wind-powered sloop that left Stavanger on July 4, 1825 for the Port of New York.   This perilous voyage was the first organized group-emigration of Norwegians to the United States. It was the beginning of the mass immigration of 800,000 Norwegians to North America.
The event starts at 6:00  p.m. at the fellowship hall of the Salem Lutheran Church with opening exercises and a catered Swedish meatball buffet, featuring two tables of Scandinavian desserts.   This bi-centennial gala is organized by the Nordic Lodge of the Sons of Norway. Guests are encouraged to wear folk costumes. Also welcome are Norwegian or Icelandic sweaters. For reservations, contact Kermit Singelstad, lodge president.
This 200 year anniversary celebration is one of the first of many to be held in the Lefse Belt stretching from Lake Michigan to the Pacific Northwest.
