EAGLE GROVE — The 8th grade musicians of Robert Blue Middle School (RBMS) took to the Auditorium last Tuesday night for a milestone performance — their last as middle school students. And to a convocation of proud parents, other family, friends, and community members, they proceeded with a commanding performance of singing and symphony that filled the air with complex arrangements, and harmonies.

Kicking off at 7:30 p.m., the concert featured performances by both 7th and 8th grade students, highlighting the musical growth and talent developed over the course of their middle school years. For the 8th graders, their final concert was a powerful reflection of just how far they’ve come — not only as musicians, but as young people learning the value of dedication, teamwork, and expression. And in a very real sense, you could ‘see’ the growth of their skills, with your eyes closed.

The 8th grade choir delivered an emotional and inspiring performance of “I Was Here,” arranged by Janet Day, followed by two stirring selections arranged by Mac Huff: “Seize the Day” and “You Will Be Found.” Their voices, confident and expressive, reverberated through the auditorium — marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next.

The 7th/8th Grade Band, a combined effort of both grades, brought energy and precision to the stage with four pieces: “Fanfare and Fireworks” by Brian Balmages, “Mystic Journey” by Robert Sheldon, “After the Rain” by Matt Neufeld, and “Warriors of the 16th Empire” by Randall D. Standridge. The progression of the students in musicianship was evident in every song — a credit to the kids’ hard work and the guidance of their instructors.

The 7th grade choir also had their moment to shine with a crowd-pleasing set that included “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten and Dave Bassett, the classic “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” by Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer, and Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing.” Each enthusiastically performed.

The evening was also a chance to recognize those who make these performances possible. Special thanks were extended to Mr. Toliver, Mr. Schild, the custodial staff, Mr. Schwake and Ms. Tweeten for technical support, and all RBMS teachers who support music education. Sponsors of the 2024–2025 music department were acknowledged as well, including Eagle Grove Pharmacy, Jim and Diane Middleton, and Sara Middleton in memory of Troy Middleton, along with donors in memory of Roi Anne Gearhart.

As always, audience members were encouraged to enjoy the student artwork displayed in the hall.

It was a memorable performance for all, but for those who were closing out their middle school journey, it was an unforgettable experience. And yet their musical journeys have hardly yet begun, with their high school years, and lives and careers to follow. And the people of Eagle Grove will be listening.
