Wrestlers Face Action-Packed Start to Season

The newly combined Eagle Grove and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows girls wrestling team opened their 2025-26 season at a Charles City quad that featured Algona, Clear Lake, and the hosting Comets on November 17th.

The Eagles would lose 72-12 vs. Algona, 42-18 vs. Charles City, and 51-12 against Clear Lake.

Catherine Orozco (100) and Marlee Thompson (115) both earned 1st period falls in their matches vs. Algona, and Thompson had another pin vs. Clear Lake’s Kenna Eilders to wind up 2-1 on the day.

Keeley Peterson (155) won twice by forfeit.

Last Thursday, the ladies returned to action in Webster County at the Fort Dodge Girls Early Bird.

Algona took 1st place with 132 total team points, followed by Fort Dodge (68), Boone (59), and Des Moines Hoover (34). Eagle Grove finished with 30 points for 5th place.

Orozco, Peterson, and Morgan Keller (120) all won a match on the day, and Thompson went 2-0 after winning by fall and major decision.

Finally, the girls ended their brutal first week of wrestling with a Saturday morning tournament in Emmetsburg.

Thirteen other schools were in attendance at the Lady E-Hawk Wrestling Tournament, and EG finished an impressive 8th place with 106.5 points.

Central Lyon (266), GTRA (223), and Humboldt (168) all placed in the Top-3.

Thompson was a runner-up at 115 after dominating her first three matches and finishing 4-1 on the day.

Orozco earned bronze, while Peterson and Keylyee Collins (135) both took home 4th place.

Baylee Steig (7th/140), Elideth Santiago (8th/125), and Mya Gilbert (8th/120) all medaled for the Eagles as well.

The team will return to the mat on Monday, December 1st at a tournament in Manson
