On Saturday morning, the Eagle Grove boys wrestling team traveled to Forest City to take part in the Top of Iowa Conference Tournament.

The Eagles placed an impressive 5th in a stacked field of 14 teams.  The (2A) #11 Osage Green Devils were champions with 252 team points, followed by (1A) #4 Lake Mills with 239, Forest City with 176.5, and (1A) #13 Nashua-Plainfield with 173 to complete the Top-5.

“We scored 73 team points a year ago and finished in 11th place,” Coach Schafer said after the meet.  “This year, we scored 169 points and finished 5th.  I’m really proud of how we are competing and buying into the “hard work pays off” mantra.

Dylan Terwilliger, who placed 3rd as a 120-pounder in 2025, was a runner-up at 126-pounds.  Hayden Schafer (157) and James Harle (285) also took home silver for Eagle Grove.

“We had a pretty good day,” Coach Schafer commented.  “We had three finalists in Hayden, Dylan, and James.  They wrestled well and scored points for our team.  We came away with three seconds to wrestlers who have beaten us earlier in the year.”

Freshman Christian Schild earned bronze at 190-pounds after going 3-1 on the day with two decisions and a fall.  His classmate Colson Schafer went 4-1 on Saturday and brought home 3rd place at 144-pounds.

“Colson Schafer and Christian Schild are starting to figure out high school wrestling,” Coach Schafer added.  “Both were very successful as youth wrestlers, and now you are seeing it on the [high school] mat.”

Colson won by decision over West Hancock’s Preston Gayken in the 3rd place match.  He now has a 24-18 record in his first high school season.

Hunter Waldo-Martinez (132) and Jayden Estrada-Kreitlow (175) both finished 5th in their respective weight classes.
