(Photo courtesy of Lowell Washburn)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than $1.5 billion on specialized bird seeds, bird feeding doesn\u2019t need to be a budget buster.\u00a0 Simple, low-cost backyard programs can still supply our feathered friends with plenty of winter nutrition.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to maintain body heat, wintering birds need fat and carbs, and plenty of it.\u00a0 They will consume all the calories they can get their little beaks on.\u00a0 Black-oil sunflower seeds are a high energy food source that is eagerly consumed by nearly all of Iowa\u2019s wintering bird species \u2013 including long distance Canadian visitors such as siskins, redpolls, and purple finches.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most ground feeding birds \u2013 juncos, doves, a wide variety of sparrows, and jays \u2013 will readily accept offerings of cracked corn which can be placed directly on the ground or in shallow wooden trays.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunflower seed can also be added to the cracked corn.\u00a0 When placed on the ground, be sure to only put out what birds will clean up before food becomes wet or moldy \u2013 usually not a problem in below freezing temps.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding a suet feeder or some crunchy peanut butter to your program will attract fat craving birds like chickadees, several species of woodpeckers, flickers and nuthatches.\u00a0 Add a<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shallow heated bird bath to the mix, and you\u2019ll be amazed at its use.\u00a0 These are all the ingredients you\u2019ll need to attract a wide variety of winter birdlife.\u00a0 For those who want to go a step farther, specialty seeds like peanut hearts, Nyjer thistle, sunflower hearts, and others can be added to attract potentially greater numbers of more specific species.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habitat is key to winter survival.\u00a0 Whether they reside in rural or residential landscapes, birds need secure escape and nighttime roosting cover.\u00a0 The more desirable your location already is to wintering wildlife, the greater the diversity and abundance of birdlife you\u2019ll enjoy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enjoy more wildlife tales online at Washburn\u2019s Outdoor Journal at iawildlife.org\/blog\/.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9520\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9520\" style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9520 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/midamerica.news\/eagle-grove-eagle-2\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2025\/01\/5-pine-siskin-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Nesting in northern Canada, the pine siskin is a common winter visitor to backyard feeders.
