{"id":3889,"date":"2021-09-15T16:36:39","date_gmt":"2021-09-15T16:36:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/midamerica.news\/grundyregister\/2021\/09\/15\/gc-council-hears-historical-presentation-approves-big-grants-3\/"},"modified":"2021-09-15T16:36:39","modified_gmt":"2021-09-15T16:36:39","slug":"gc-council-hears-historical-presentation-approves-big-grants-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/midamerica.news\/grundyregister\/2021\/09\/15\/gc-council-hears-historical-presentation-approves-big-grants-3\/","title":{"rendered":"GC council hears historical presentation, approves BIG grants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"center\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>GRUNDY CENTER- During its regular meeting on Monday evening, the Grundy Center city council heard a presentation from Mary Doak of the Grundy Center Historical Society and approved four BIG grant applications.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of Doak&rsquo;s presentation was to ask the council for permission to petition to be on the ballot for a cultural and scientific tax levy that would amount 27 cents per $1,000 of taxable value on property. She highlighted several of the society&rsquo;s recent activities and initiatives, including a tribute to the history of printing in Grundy Center and an exhibit and accompanying DVD on local country schools.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Times have changed, but the heart of Grundy Center has not changed,&rdquo; Doak said. &ldquo;Keeping the history of Grundy Center alive is worth a small amount of money.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Al Kiewiet thanked Doak for educating him on the intricacies of historical preservation and touted the role that the historical society plays in promoting tourism in Grundy Center.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a huge draw for a lot of people, especially people from large metropolitan areas who can&rsquo;t believe people still live like this,&rdquo; Kiewiet said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The council did not take official action but will likely revisit the matter at a future meeting if the historical society can collect enough signatures to get the item on the ballot.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A total of four BIG Grant applications were approved during the meeting: one for Jason Monaghan at <em>The Grundy Register <\/em>building ($10,000); another for John Heeren at Cornfed Designs ($10,000); a third for the yet to be completed Chad&rsquo;s Pizza and Restaurant location on Commerce Drive ($10,000) and a fourth for the Grundy Center Theater Association ($9,927). All of them passed with unanimous approval except for the Chad&rsquo;s grant, which Butch Kuester opposed (Chad Hamann was absent).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kling Memorial Library Director Lindsey Freese attended the meeting to discuss a resolution allowing for the hire of Kaitlyn Freese as the Youth Services Assistant to replace retired Children&rsquo;s Librarian Becky Bonnette, and it received unanimous approval along with the wage increases as recommended by the library board.
